How to find your signature scent
Christian Dior once said, “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting”. But with rows upon rows of beautifully packaged perfumes, how do you pick the right one for you?
What scents do you love? The answer is already right under your nose. Think about your daily life. Are you attracted to sweet and floral smells, or fresh, crisp and citrusy notes? Once you’ve identified a particular note or two, whether it’s fruity or spicy, there are few online resources that can point you in the right direction to fragrances that include your favoured scents. Visit https://www.fragrantica.com/notes/ and start researching.
Test like a pro
If you’re starting from scratch, test the perfume on a test paper first. Many brands make use of paper strips as way to help you get a feel for what you like before applying a fragrance directly onto the skin. Should a scent take your fancy, spray the perfume on a pulse point, like the inside of your elbow or wrist, so it can warm to your skin. Don’t rub the perfume in though! Experts say this overheats the scent and masks its subtleties.
Wait and see
If it’s love at first sight, (and smell) congratulations on finding your perfect match! If you’re a little undecided don’t get discouraged. A perfume’s stronger top notes usually wear off within 15 to 30 minutes which means the essence of the fragrance and how it wears on you takes a little more time.
Rather than testing multiple fragrances at the same time, ask the fragrance counter assistants for testers to take home and try later. Believe it or not, perfumes can smell different depending on the time of day, the weather, and your own unique body chemistry.
Finding a scent you love can be a wonderfully enjoyable experience, especially when you know what you’re looking for and how to look for it. And of course, Mall of the North has the very best selection of fragrances at our gorgeous health and beauty stores.
